At Greasby Junior School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language enriches
children’s education and helps them to understand the world beyond their immediate
experience. Our MFL curriculum, taught through French, provides pupils with the
opportunity to develop curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in learning another language
while broadening their understanding of other cultures and communities.

Through engaging and interactive lessons, pupils learn to listen, speak, read and write in
French with increasing accuracy and fluency. Lessons are designed to build pupils’ phonics,
vocabulary and grammar knowledge, enabling them to communicate ideas effectively and
accurately.

Children are encouraged to practise speaking and listening regularly through songs, games,
role play and conversation activities that make learning fun and meaningful. As pupils
progress through Key Stage 2, they move from simple greetings and descriptions to
expressing opinions, building sentences using correct grammatical structures, and writing
short paragraphs with increasing independence.

Our MFL curriculum also promotes cultural awareness, helping pupils appreciate similarities
and differences between life in France and the UK, and fostering respect and understanding
of diversity. By the time children leave Greasby Junior School, they are well-prepared for the
continued study of languages at secondary school, with a strong foundation in
pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and communication.
