Keeping Safe
Keeping Safe
At Greasby Junior School, the safety and wellbeing of our pupils is our top priority. We work hard to ensure that children understand how to keep themselves safe in a variety of situations, both in and out of school.
Road Safety
Children are taught the importance of being safe near roads, whether they are walking to school, crossing the road, or travelling with family and friends. We encourage the use of safe crossing points, looking and listening carefully before stepping out, and walking sensibly near traffic. Local authority road safety officers also visit school to deliver age-appropriate workshops and assemblies.
Cycling Safety – Bikeability
As part of our curriculum enrichment, children in Year 5 are offered the chance to take part in the nationally recognised Bikeability training (previously known as Cycle Proficiency). This equips them with the skills and confidence to ride their bikes safely, both on the playground and on local roads. Helmets and safe cycling habits are strongly promoted.
Water Safety
As we approach the summer term, pupils take part in a dedicated Water Safety workshop and assembly. This provides them with vital knowledge on how to stay safe around ponds, rivers, lakes, swimming pools, and the sea. Children learn about the dangers of open water, the importance of swimming with an adult present, and what to do in an emergency.
Personal Safety and Awareness
We also help children to think about how to keep themselves safe in their daily lives, such as:
-
Staying with a trusted adult when out and about.
-
Knowing what to do if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
-
Understanding how to keep safe in the sun and in different environments.
-
Learning about fire safety and emergency procedures, sometimes supported by visits from local fire and rescue services.
By working together with parents, carers, and the wider community, we aim to give our pupils the knowledge and confidence they need to make safe choices as they grow.
