Year 3

Below are the details of the work to be covered by Year 3 during this term. You have already received a newsletter with details of important dates for the whole school, but we will send details of any events specifically for Year 3 during the term.

Literacy

The children will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts in Literacy, following our Pathways to Read and Write schemes of work.
Through thought provoking texts (Seal Surfer, Winter’s Child, The Sea Book and Ice Palace), the children will recap and build upon on many Y2 skills before embarking on our Y3 learning.
They will continue to use a range of punctuation (including apostrophes for possession and accurate use of inverted commas) and will extend their use of conjunctions to create more complex sentences. They will build a varied and rich vocabulary and will be introduced to prepositions of
time, place and cause.
Reading skills will be developed through immersing ourselves in both books and we use ‘Reading Detectives’ to learn the comprehension skills of Vocabulary, Infer, Predict, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise (VIPERS) to enable the children to gain a thorough understanding of the texts they encounter.
As part of their spelling work, the children will have the opportunity to reflect on and revise spellings in addition to learning new patterns and rules. They will also continue to review the National Curriculum statutory spellings.

Numeracy

During Year 3, the children will continue to follow the ‘Maths No Problem’ scheme they encountered in Key Stage 1. This term, we will consolidate and extend the children’s understanding of:
• Place Value
• Ordering Numbers
• Number patterns
• Addition and Subtraction Facts
• Multiplying by 3, 4 and 8
• Solving Word Problems
• Multiplying and dividing 2 digit numbers
They will use and apply their skills in order to solve a range of puzzles and investigations. The rapid recall of number facts will continue to play a large part in the daily maths lesson; please continue to help your child to practise their times tables (and related division facts) if they are not recalling the facts quickly. We will introduce the children to Times Tables Rock Stars in order to improve their speed of recall.

Science

We will begin by investigating a range of light sources and how light can be reflected from surfaces. We will then learn to recognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object and find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.
Secondly, we will compare how things move on different surfaces and notice that some forces need contact between 2 objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance. We will also observe how
magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials but not others.

ICT

Using word processing and desktop publishing, the children will learn how to combine images and text to present an information poster on UK locations. They will learn how to navigate websites so that they can collate accurate research. The Galactica Luxmeter app will be used to link their learning to science, where the children will explore how light levels change within the classroom. In addition, they will continue to develop their programming and coding skills, as well as keep up-to-date with internet

PSHE / RE

During this term, we will continue with our PSHE work using the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme. Through these lessons, they will explore issues based on ‘Being Me in my world’ and ‘Celebrating Differences’. In RE, the children will study a unit of work on ‘the life of Jesus’ as well as looking at ‘Gifts at Christmas’.

History

The basis of our curriculum in history is the enquiry ‘What were the Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age? This enquiry will introduce the children to the idea that people have been living in Britain for a very long time. They will learn about the changes that occurred between the middle Stone Age to the Iron Age – a period of over 10,000
years! It will ensure that they understand that for most of the period there is no written evidence, so the archaeological record is very important. They will also recognise the nature of the evidence on which their judgements and knowledge are based.

Art

In art, the children will practise their sketching and shading skills, before they explore a how to create perspective in a drawing. They will also learn about the artist, L.S. Lowry.

Design Technology

Linked to our Stone Age topic, the children will be investigating the properties of roundhouses. They will then design and make their own model of a roundhouse which should reflect and inform about the structural design and materials used in the Stone Age.

Music

This term, the children will listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory. They will learn to perform in an ensemble context, using their voices with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression for their performance in an ensemble context at the Year 4 Christmas Service.

Languages

The children will continue to develop their language skills in French this term. They will consolidate their basic conversational skills and develop their understanding of the written language.

PE and Games

Year 3 will have their games sessions each Thursday afternoon, during which they will develop their skills in circuit training, tennis, hockey and hoop ball.
The children will receive homework each week, details of which will be in their Homework Books. This will be set on a Friday, and is due in by the following Thursday. Please could you ensure that they have their Homework Books in school by Thursday every week. Having checked that their homework is complete each week, please sign their ’sticky’. We encourage the children to try to complete their homework over the weekend or on Monday so, if there are any problems, they can attend Homework Club on a Tuesday or come and ask us for help before it is due for completion each Thursday. Please could you also encourage your child to read at least 3x a week and record these reads in their Logs. Please ensure that they have their Reading Log in school every day and that it is signed and ready to be checked by Friday every week.
We hope that you find this information useful and that your child enjoys their first term of Year 3.
