Year 4
Below is an overview of the work to be covered by the Year Four children in the coming weeks.
Literacy
The children will be reading the book, ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne. Using this book, we will cover a number of different genres of writing such as, fact files, setting descriptions, diary entries and story writing. After half term, we will be moving onto the book, ‘Leon and the Place Between’ which will focus on the text types: information
flyers, diary entries and persuasive texts amongst others.
The children will also be advancing their reading VIPERS knowledge when working through the books with their teacher. We will also continue to
complete regular ‘Reading Detectives’ comprehensions.
Numeracy
Following on from Year Three, we will continue to work on the “Maths No Problem!” scheme. “Maths No Problem!” has been proven to create understanding at a greater depth and mastery of the subject. This term we will cover:
• Numbers to 10,000
• Addition and Subtraction of numbers to 10,000
• Multiplication and Division
Science
In Science, we will be studying ‘animals including humans’ where we will be exploring how the digestive system works and looking at food chains.
We will also be studying ‘states of matter’ with a particular focus on
the particle structure in solids, liquids and gases.
ICT
In ICT, the children will be covering some internet safety work to
broaden their knowledge of how to stay safe online. They will also be
doing some coding, as well as exploring google searching. As our
creative computing project, we will be creating story boards about the Romans and a Stop Motion movie which links with our digestive system topic in science.
History
In History this term we are learning all about the Romans, in particular exploring reasons for the Roman invasion of Britain as well as the Roman influence on the culture of Britain and the resistance of the native Britons.
Geography
In Geography, the children will be learning all about our region; the North West and then comparing it to a contrasting European location; The Naples Bay Region. The children will make use of maps and other sources to conduct their study and during their learning journey they will also be looking at Europe as a whole, The Mediterranean region and Italy before looking at the Naples Bay Region.

The children will be creating collages after studying existing designs and artists. We will also be doing a particular artist study on Hannah Hoch with a focus on portraits.
DT
In DT, we will be making sling shot cars using mechanical structures.
Music
The children are learning the Ukulele for 10 weeks through the first access scheme.
R.E.
In R.E. the children will look at Islam and Advent.
PSHE
We believe that social and emotional education is a vital building block to prepare children to learn with confidence. This year, Greasby Junior School are using a new scheme called ‘Jigsaw’, a mindful approach to PSHE, to ensure consistency and progression in this vital curriculum area. In the Autumn term, Year 4 will be covering the units ‘Being Me’ and ‘Celebrating Differences’.
We hope that you find this information useful.
