Year 5

Below is an overview of the work to be covered by the Year Five children this autumn.

This term the children will begin by studying and basing their writing on the book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. Through this text, we will look at diaries, letter entries and description, and the children will create their own versions based on the structural and grammatical features they learn.
Secondly, the children will be studying and writing fictional tales based on the book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. Through this genre, we will look at traditional tales, letter entries and poems and the children will create their own versions based on the structural and grammatical features they learn.

The children will revisit and build on concepts related to place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Arithmetic will be regularly practised and the children will continue to learn and revise multiplication tables throughout the term.

Throughout this first term, the children will be working a unit called ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’. Within this unit, we will look at how different materials can be grouped, discuss the different types of changes that can occur in materials and also looking into the work of key scientists in this field.

In Geography, the children will be completing a study of the continent of North America. Here, we hone in on map skills, before moving on to a study of the USA. This study includes looking at physical features, climate and population. These features are compared with other parts of the globe that the children have study in previous years.

The children will extend their word processing and desktop publishing skills. In addition, they will work with a range of spreadsheets and use software to develop their knowledge of code and computer programming.

The children will explore mechanical systems, resulting in them designing, making and evaluating their own pop-up books.

P.E and Games

This term, the children will participate in a range of gymnastic activities and they will also further develop their skills related to invasion games (netball).

Through looking at the work of Antony Gormley and Grayson Perry, the children will plan, design and make models, manipulating clay in a variety of ways, e.g. rolling, kneading and shaping, thumb pots, simple coil pots and models, whilst also understanding the safety and basic care of materials and tools.

In R.E, the children will look at a collection of Parables and Miracles, exploring morals and relationships within special stories. They will then study the Christmas story from the view of the shepherds.

The children will continue to build on their prior French learning, developing more fluency in their speech and writing. This term’s unit is called ‘Shopping in France’.

PSHE – Jigsaw

We will continue to follow the PSHE programme called ‘Jigsaw’. During this term, the children will be discussing lessons, practising mindfulness and reflecting upon their world within two themes: ‘Being Me’ and ‘Celebrating Differences’.
We hope that you find this information useful and that your children enjoy their first term in Year 5.

If you do have any particular knowledge or expertise in any of these areas, we would welcome your support and ask for you to please get in touch.

We look forward to working with many of you during this exciting term.
